Orc Warrior Portrait
I’ve always been interested in orcs. There is something about the human’esque feel to them, yet, maintaining the savage beast-like aspects. The oversized teeth mixed with strong jaw bones, it’s beauty in the ugliness. I love all of it.
When I was a teenager, I found the game World of Warcraft and it further pushed my love of orcs. It gave me a stronger story behind them, it gave reason for the hatred of humans, it furthered everything I loved and I was forever hooked.
Because of this, it’s common to find me sketching orcs. I decided it was time to push one far enough to add to my portfolio. Like most, this started as a sketch, I was doing a study to with a real skull and once I saw the orc, my direction changed.
For those who follow my work on Instagram, you will see the various stages this piece went through. I stared with some rough lines but I never like them too crisp as I feel trapped by them so I quickly go to the value stage. As I was in this stage, I was a little too zoomed in so I worked one side and neglected the other. I zoomed out to continue working and balanced the piece. I added the color and the final is that from above.
