This is the study of eyes, nose, mouth, and an ear. I created this quite a few years ago and just found it, and figured I’d share it with all of you. It’s not in traditional oil paints and it was done on canvas panel. I created this quite a few years ago and just found it, and figured I’d share it with all of you. When creating a study such as this, you have to take into consideration lighting and value. References are very useful, almost essential if you are going for true to life. I used reference on these, and in the helped quite a bit. The brand I used for this was Windsor & Newton brand or oil paints, the standard oils, since then, I’ve now moved to Windsor & Newton water miscible oil’s that remove the need for harmful toxins which usually give me a headache when I’m painting even when I was in a well-ventilated room. With the water miscible oils, you can still work in the traditional oil versions but you don’t need to have the harmful toxins, all that you need is water and water-miscible additives.
My study like this, it’s important to think of form over color. The color is great for creating mood and the ethnicity of the character your painting, but form and value override everything with color. If the value isn’t correct, nothing else will be correct. Always think of value and form first, color second.
